SSH Tunnel and FreeCap

SSH Tunnel and FreeCap

Some applications are not 'Socks Aware', so they cannot be configured to access the SSH tunnel. Using third party programs you can cause them to access the SSH tunnel. For this we recommend FreeCap.

To use freecap, first download and install with default options from here:

http://www.freecap.ru/eng/?p=download

After installation, you have to configure it to access our servers. Do the following:

  1. Start FreeCap. Choose File -> Settings.
  2. In the menu across the top, choose 'Proxy Settings'.
  3. In the server box, enter 127.0.0.1
  4. In the 'Port' box, enter 1088.
  5. Choose 'Socks Version 5', Unheck 'Authentication required'.
  6. From the menu across the top, choose ' Program'.
  7. **Under 'DNS Name Resolving' , Choose Remote
  8. Click 'Apply' and 'OK'.

Now you are ready to add your applications to FreeCap. To Use an application within freecap, simply:

  1. Choose from FreeCap's main menu: File -> New Application.
  2. In 'Profile Name', enter the name of the program you are running.
  3. In Program path, enter the path to the executable for your program. For instance, if we were using Internet Explorer, we would enter:
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
  4. Click Ok.

Now in the FreeCap window, you should see an Icon for your application. Somply double-click it to run it through freecap, and thus through our servers.

** This is optional. Leaving this option set to 'Local' would cause the DNS lookup to happen through your ISP's local DNS servers. This information would include the requested site's URL, nothing more. However, this certainly raises a privacy concern for some. Enabling the 'remote' option will cause the DNS lookups to happen at our server rather than your ISP, keeping this information safe.
